Over 1,500 years ago desert ironwood saplings were pushing through the Sonoran Desert sands. Incredibly, some of these very desert ironwood trees are still alive today. It takes hundreds of years for a single desert ironwood tree to grow, making these some of the oldest trees in the Sonoran Desert. Because they are so long-lived, each tree forms a micro-habitat of its own. These trees provide housing, food, and protection to hundreds of different species, including birds, insects, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
The Seri Indians have historically utilized all parts of the desert ironwood tree. They ate the seeds, made medicine from the roots, inner bark, and flowers, used the trunk for firewood, tools, and carvings, and utilized the shade provided by the dense canopy. The Seri Indians believed that carvings made from this wood brought about good fortune and long life, perhaps because the desert ironwood tree itself provides life for so many creatures.
The increasing urbanization of Arizona is encroaching on desert ironwood land, and the over-harvesting of these trees has resulted in collection regulations. Only the Seri Indians may collect this wood, and it may only be collected after the desert ironwood tree has naturally fallen. Many of these dead trees have been lying in the desert for hundreds of years, petrifying in the sun. This renders the wood even denser, making it extremely difficult to hand-carve as the Seri Indians do. It is this hardness; however, that gives the wood its beautiful sheen. Unfortunately, the dead ironwood trees will eventually diminish, and the carving of this wood will cease.
