The Zapotec rugs Kokopelli offers are hand-woven by the ancient Zapotec tribe of Mexico. In the Zapotec culture, the entire family assists in the creation of these rugs. The men usually collect the ingredients used for some of the dyes. These ingredients – consisting of seeds, roots, fruits, flowers, and even insects – require a vast knowledge of plants. The wool is carded and then hand-spun by the women, who use the collected ingredients to dye it. The men then weave the rugs, using large ancient looms.
Traditional Zapotec and Navajo designs, such as butterflies, triangles, diamonds, and birds, are often incorporated in the design. The weavers know many of these designs by heart, but for new designs, they follow a pattern drawn on a piece of paper. The weaving process is very time consuming. A simple 2.5′ x 5′ weaving can take over ten days to complete; large rugs can take months. The beauty of these rugs is inherent, as is the craftmanship. Come visit Kokopelli to see and feel them for yourself.
